Embrace being part of the conversation
This here, folks, is a reality check.
I empathize with so many of you (particularly my colleagues) who are stressed about making that first frightful step in the blogging world. But, some of you are dead-set against the practice of blogging, have written about hating it and are only doing so because it’s required for our Online PR course.
I think what’s important to keep in mind is how fortunate we are to have professors who are genuinely interested in helping us get where we want to be.
You may ask, “Why are we doing this?” and think blogging is nothing more than an online diary. But, believe it or not, we are ahead of the game. Students learning social media is more rare than you think.
As Gary recently posted in the course blog, two practitioners have written about the fact that PR students at Centennial have started blogs as part of the curriculum.
I suggest you go read the discussion on Joseph Thornley’s blog that reaches both ends of the argument. I find James McNally’s point of view particularly interesting. But, as I pointed out in my comment (which is currently awaiting moderation), I think PR students can prove their worth in the blogosphere.
Also of interest is Bob LeDrew’s entry asking for feedback from PR and communications students who are learning about social media. Drop him a line and let him know what you think about what we’re learning. He’s genuinely interested!
LeDrew also recently wrote about Joseph Jaffe’s new book Join the Conversation, about using Web 2.0 and applying it to your business. He offered up a copy of the book to an Ottawa-based student studying PR, communications or journalism who left the best comment about “joining the conversation.” But, no one posted!
So, he gave a friendly reminder about the contest to students in Ottawa, while threatening to open the contest to students elsewhere:
If I don’t see any comments coming from local students, I’m gonna open the gates up to any student in Canada. I regularly see pings from places like Centennial College, Mount Royal, and Grant McEwan, so maybe they just want to work on the cutting edge of communications more.
When responses finally started to arrive, LeDrew made this comment in response to an entrant:

Thanks, Rayanne, for your participation in the conversation. Maybe I’m just an old dog who can’t learn new tricks, but I started my blog before there were things like Facebook, and so that’s my main point of contact online. I don’t treat it like an extension of my job, but rather as an extension of my whole life. It’s a tricky balance, now, knowing how employers scour Google for everything we’ve ever written online. I can only hope the good outweighs the bad! If not, better keep writing!

I understand your take on new bloggers stepping in where they may or may not belong. But, I think there are some budding professionals who have a lot of interesting things to say, and maybe even “old dogs” can benefit from them : )
I know I’m young, but I’ve been blogging for a long time, too—simply because I enjoyed to do it. I may be less personal in my postings now, but I try to avoid using this space as an extension of my resume (something you’ve noticed with many recent student blogs). I’m just writing about how this learning process affects me.
Again, I’m doing this because I think it’s fun. Yes, this blog is now being graded, but I’ve been writing here long before I knew it was going to be a proponent of the course. And, if there’s one person who will continue to blog about learning PR even when the class is complete, it will be me. Then again, I spend hours looking through my Google Reader and Twitter, hoping to find something that strikes my interest.
But, in response to your final point, I’m on your side 100 per cent. Because I’ve been pumping out information online for such a long time, I have to be extra careful about what employers are finding through Google searches. I guess that’s the cue, right? Oh well, I’m sure I’ll be fine : )

“Engaging ourselves in the conversation,” is one of the most empowering freedoms we have. There are people in parts of the world persecuted for saying what they feel. Speaking up for them is simply prohibited, think of their worlds… We have so many platforms to say what we’re feeling, express opinions on topics, offer up solutions, and engage in debate, where in some places – it is absolutely forbidden.
I believe we really do have an opportunity to inspire people, on many levels.

It’s funny hearing about a blog being graded. I don’t thnk there is anything wrong with it, it just shows how far things have come.
Anyone who doesn’t think having a blog is good PR or beneficial doesn’t realise that the guy running the blogs at the LA times was one of the first bloggers. The fact the LA times has a bumch of blogs says a lot in itself.
I’m not sure where I was going with this, but I find blogs absent of a personal touch to be dry – and I also can tell you that no matter what your blog is about, the number one draw to any blog is the YOU factor.
Once you draw someone in on the simplest of things, they will come back over and over. The more personal you add, the better.
That’s not to say I do it because I too am aware of employers Googling peole and that is a bit creepy.
It’s creepier, however, not to have a voice.
Having said all that (and it’s very disorganized what I have said) we are allowed to have a voice and opinions, and I think putting you voice out there is good for you, makes you more comfortable with yourself.
I don’t think blogs are cutting edge anymore. I think the new technologies that allow people or brands to have their own free “channels”/livestreams etc has become more fun to watch.
Blogging is nothing new although it is stil uncharted waters with loads of possibility.
For your purpose… well it is interesting to watch how it is being used in your course … I know Tony Pierce goes and talks at schools…
Anyway theres no need to be scared when writing a new blog it usually takes the serch engines a few months to pick up any blog.
People should be themsevles or if they are focussing one one subject then put some of themself into that. That’s what people read.

I posted this to make a point about how and why what we’re being taught is beneficial to us. I agree that blogging is a pretty old tactic now, but there are so many people who are just beginning to dabble in it. Also, what’s so great about the open source concept of many blog hosting sites is that what we are able to do with our blogs and our posts is constantly evolving.
And, yes—podcasting, streaming audio and visual, etc. are some pretty interesting tools professionals in PR and other areas are taking advantage of. However, how long will it be before the social media elite write these tactics off as obsolete, too? We can do so much more with the medium if we think about our objectives and process first.
As I’ve told many people, yes—my classmates and I had to start a PR-focused blog for our Online PR course. However, you know better than most that this blog has lived much longer than the start of the assignment. I’m not trying to brag, or say I’m better at this than other people. I’m just saying I’m a huge nerd, and I love this stuff. I don’t know what else to say about that. It’s becoming very difficult to prove my sincerity.
As for the Google comment—I disagree. At least in my situation. Almost every time my name is mentioned on the web, Google picks it up. But hey, that’s just me.
Finally, yeah, the being graded on our blogs thing can seem a little weird to people not in the program (heck, it probably sounds weird to many IN the program). And, although I don’t know much about the marking scheme, I know we’re being graded on our ability to post relevant topics to PR, initiate thoughtful conversation, engage in discussion on other blogs and, above all, to write well!
I hope you got through all of that okay. I can see you and I are not through our continuous debate! : )

I highly recomment getting statcounter.com acount. It doesn’t just tell you the numbers coming to your blog, it tells you who, where, what they searched for, etc.
