Learning to overcome personal challenges
On Sunday, I attended (and volunteered a little, but was barely needed due to excellent organization!) PodCamp Toronto 2008. I had such a good time basking in being a huge nerdly nerdstrom. But, I decided to challenge myself a little at this event.
A posting by my colleague Kristen Zemlak today reinforced my belief that I need to take more risks in social media, PR education and life in general. She wrote:
As we have recently learned during in-class interviewing modules, it’s common practice for interviewers to ask questions to which they already know the answers. Their intent being to get their source to tell the story.
I responded:
I agree with that statement 100 per cent. I know what I find interesting, and sometimes it’s difficult to ask questions that aren’t intended to reinforce my beliefs.
Some of my classmates consider me ahead of the pack when it comes to involvement in social media. One of them asked me today why I didn’t ask a question during Inside PR’s 100th episode recording session. I told her I already knew the answers to the questions I wanted to ask, and felt it would be pointless to revive the dead horse. I know this is a weakness of mine, and I am trying to take more risks.
At PodCamp, I sat in on sessions about TalkShoe, interpreting web stats and Yahoo! Pipes among others. I knew next to nothing about any of these topics before Sunday, and I am very excited to see how I can put new tactics to use.
I’m not gonna lie—I was in heaven while listening in on a Twitter panel discussion with Connie Crosby, Dave Fleet, Adele McAlear, Eden Spodek and Tommy Vallier. But, I could have attended more talks about topics I’m well aware of.
The most important thing I learned this weekend is:
I can have just as much fun learning something new than looking to talk about something I’m already passionate about.
I’m sorry for the tease; I will write a more detailed post about PodCamp Toronto soon. I just needed to let some steam out of my personal air ducts tonight.

Your heart is pounding, you find yourself unable to catch your breath, you second guess the word choices that you intend to use, you make minimal eye contact, your voice raises as if you are going through puberty again, etc.
Sound familiar? That is why I declined to ask Dave and Terry my question regarding “Where do you draw the line in the sand with your own personal brand. Do you have to be “on” 24/7–or can you be a normal person, make mistakes and say what you want to say?”
Anyways, I am sure it was worded WAY better in my head.

Great to hear you enjoyed PodCamp, and even better that you learned some new things too.
Twitter was definitely a theme throughout the weekend, both in the presentations and out in the halls. From an organizer’s perspective, it helped us to coordinate the event as things ebbed and flowed in real time, too.

Thank you so much for joining us at Podcamp, and for being there as a volunteer for us. It did go smoothly but it was good to know there were hands around available to pitch in.
I know what it is like to hang back and not be sure about jumping in with comments. I am naturally very shy and have had to push myself. I started by challenging myself to ask questions in situations just like this. Gradually I worked up to short presentations, and now I teach full courses standing in front of classes. It is well worth pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.
Anyway, I’m glad you got so much out of the weekend!

I’ve become much less shy than I used to be, also. I think I shocked some of my classmates with my ability to present speeches quite well in our presentations skills class. I love to speak in front of people. But, I need to prepare, prepare, prepare.
When I meet industry people, or others I respect very much, I am overwhelmed with intimidation. There are so many ideas and topics constantly running through my mind, and I would love to get feedback from others about them, but I just get so scared that my thoughts won’t transfer to words very well.
Anyway, I plan on phoning in my comment to IPR this week, so maybe that’ll be a big step for me. Although, I will definitely prepare, prepare, prepare : )

Rayanne, I’m so glad you weren’t afraid to talk to me at Third Tuesday. It helps that I have absolutely no reputation in your chosen field! But I really enjoyed our conversation (though sheepishly admit that it might have been better to talk to me a few Guinnesses earlier!) and hope we can meet again.
For what it’s worth, I also have to really push myself to speak to people at these things. You already know this, but it really helps to start the conversation online and then you can always introduce yourself as that person who made the smartass comment on their blog, or whatever.

There were many people I wanted to introduce myself to last night, but the nerves overtook me. When I saw you, though, I knew I had to talk to you after all we’ve been through. Haha. It was a pleasure. It’s refreshing to hear a point of view such as yours once in a while, because—I’m sure you know—we don’t hear it often.
Talking with you and others online has definitely helped in the offline world. It’s nice to know people know who I am, even if it’s only an online presence at first.

So glad we met at PodCamp Toronto and on twiitter earlier. Thank you so much for stepping up to the plate and offering to volunteer. Many people may seem less shy but it takes courage to volunteer at an event and interact with people you’ve never met before.
I can relate to a lot of what you’ve said. I consider myself a shy extrovert. I did a lot of lurking before I jumped into the social media pool. I’m still very shy when it comes to audio and video but I’m working on it – I’ve been thinking about leaving a comment for the next episode of IPR too.
